Raz-Kids passwords were given to each student.  For your convenience, the children have glued this information in their "Take-Home" folders. Raz-Kids.com is an excellent resource for building reading skills.  Each student works at his/her level to read books and answer comprehension questions.  They can earn stars as incentives that they can use to build robots and rocket ships.  Please take some time to sit with your child and explore this great resource.  The children are all very excited about this!
Please be sure that your child is reading each night.  It is so important that they practice reading each and every day to develop the skills learned in school.  Like anything else, mastery requires practice!!

What We Are Learning in Class 1-2

We are beginning Chapter 4 - Subtraction Strategies.   In this chapter, the students have been working hard to solve subtraction problems within 20.  They will learn many new subtraction strategies that will help them solve subtraction problems using bigger numbers.  We will learn the strategies of  "count back," "using an addition fact to help solve a subtraction problem," "use a ten to subtract" and "break apart to subtract,"

It is very important for the children to keep practicing their addition facts within ten!  Knowing these facts will help them immensely. There are many math apps where the children can practice these facts or you can simple make flashcards for practice.  We have been playing many different games in school to help the students with fluency of addition facts within ten.

Wonders - Review Week

Essential Question - "What are you thankful for?"

"The Story of the First Thanksgiving," and "The Great Turkey Race."

Genre - Information Text/Nonfiction & Fantasy

Skills - Identifying common and proper nouns and capitalizing proper nouns.

Comprehension Strategy - Beginning, Middle and End

Writing - Students will become authors and illustrators!  This week, the students will be writing stories about what they are thankful for.  Their stories will include a strong beginning, middle and end.  As always, they will continue to write stories using complete sentences that include a capital letter in the beginning, spaces between each word and punctuation at the end. They will also be encouraged to write more than one detailed sentence to begin building stamina during writing time!

Social Studies

The students have been learning about different families.  We have been learning about their family history, traditions, members of immediate and extended family, family trees, family homes, wants and needs.

The children have finished their first chapter in science called Technology All Around.  We will be having the assessment for unit 2 on Tuesday, November 20.  A study guide was sent home on Friday.   This unit discusses how engineers use a process to design and build something new.  During this chapter they have been learning how engineers work, how they solve a problem by using a design process and how we can solve a problem.  The students have also been studying what materials make up everyday objects and how these materials can be sorted.  They have been using their five senses to observe the many different materials in our world.

Chapter 3  - Jesus Grew Up in a Family

In this chapter, the students will learn how Jesus grew up as part of a family.
We will discuss that God chose Mary to be the Mother of his Son and the children will listen to Gospel story of Jesus's birth (Luke2:7).  The students will make front page headlines for a newspaper announcing the birth of Jesus.
The Children will learn that Jesus was born in Bethlehem and grew up in Nazareth with his Mother, Mary and His Father, Joseph.

Please send in all supplies labeled with your child's name if you have not done so already. Thank you!

Please check your child's folder regularly as there are important notices going home with the children daily.

Please make sure to send a snack in to school each day.

Students are to wear their gym uniform as well as white or black sneakers on gym days.
Please make sure to write your child's name on the tag of his/her gym sweatshirts.  The students often take these off and mix them up!
