Educating Hearts and Minds for
More than Seventy Years
Our sixth grade scientists engage in many hands-on activities and lab experiments throughout the year, which integrate Math and Language Arts. We focus on many topics of Earth Science such as plate tectonics, rocks and minerals, space, stars and constellations, and Earth's resources. A highlight is when the students research and study their own specific plant and then create a 3-D model to present to the class. These projects are then displayed in the classroom. In addition, the students get to form their own sedimentary rocks and see the processes that take place during rock formation. Sixth grade math students combine their knowledge of integers on a coordinate plane with their artistic ability and create their own unique “coordinate” drawings. Our sixth grade history caravan travels through ancient civilizations. Highlights include creating brochures on ancient cave paintings, writing in cuneiform, participating in Greek Olympics, and visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Before visiting the museum, the sixth graders read E.L. Konigsburg’s Newbery Medal winning novel, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. They learn a great deal about the museum from this novel and are eager to see it in real life! The study of the Old Testament in religion ties in beautifully with the social studies curriculum of ancient civilizations. The sixth grade’s presentation of the Stations of the Cross in shadow is one of the most moving experiences of the year. Students in Grade 6 continue to study a World Language. Students may choose from Italian, Spanish, French or Latin.
